Presidential Speech II

We now stand ten years past the midpoint of a century that has witnessed four major wars among great nations. Three of these involved our own country. Despite the carnage of these conflicts, America is today the strongest, the most influential and most productive nation in the world. We are understandably proud of this preeminence, yet we realize that America’s leadership and prestige depend, not merely upon our unmatched material progress, riches and military strength, but on how we use our power in the interests of world peace and human betterment.

我们现在已经走过了本世纪中点十年，这个世纪目睹了四次大国间的主要战争。其中三次涉及我们的国家。尽管这些冲突造成了伤亡，但今天的美国是世界上最强大、最有影响力、生产力最高的国家。我们为此优势感到自豪是可以理解的，但我们认识到，美国的领导地位和声望不仅依赖于我们无与伦比的物质进步、财富和军事实力，更取决于我们如何运用自己的力量来促进世界和平和人类福祉。

Throughout America’s adventure in free government, such basic purposes have been to keep the peace; to foster progress in human achievement, and to enhance liberty, dignity and integrity among peoples and among nations.
