马可

Hello English learners! Welcome back to EnglishPod! My name is Marco.

艾丽卡

And I’m Erica.

马可

And today we’re going back to the movies.

艾丽卡

That’s right, we’ve got a great lesson today and I’m really excited about this dialogue. I think it’s fantastic.

马可

Hehe. We have an original EnglishPod production of a movie trailer.

艾丽卡

So, what is a movie trailer?

马可

Well, whenever you go to the cinema…

艾丽卡

Uhu.

马可

Um, before the movie starts you have previews of upcoming movies.

艾丽卡

So, like almost an advertisement for a future movie.

马可

Exactly.

艾丽卡

Okay.

马可

So, that’s a movie trailer and that’s what we’re bringing you today.

艾丽卡

A lot of great language you’ll commonly hear in action movies.

马可

Right, so, let’s start with “vocabulary preview”. Voice: Vocabulary preview.

艾丽卡

We have one word today – possess.

马可

Possess.

艾丽卡

Possess.

马可

Possess.

艾丽卡

So, when you possess something, you…

马可

Have it.

艾丽卡

Aha.

马可

It’s in your possession. You…

艾丽卡

Simple.

马可

You have it, right?

艾丽卡

Yep.

马可

So, in this dialogue our actors possess something very important.

艾丽卡

Uhu.

马可

So, let’s listen to the dialogue for the first time and it’s going to be a little bit fast and a little bit difficult to understand.

艾丽卡

But don’t worry, we’ll come back and explain all of the key language later.

马可

Wow, so, it sounds like a really good movie.

艾丽卡

I know. When is it coming out?

马可

Uh, I think in two thousand fifteen (2015).

艾丽卡

Okay, I’ll put that in my calendar.

马可

Hehe. Okay, let’s take a look at the vocabulary we saw in this dialogue in language takeaway. Voice: Language takeaway.

马可

In language takeaway today we have three words. What’s our first one?

艾丽卡

Survival.

马可

Survival.

艾丽卡

Survival.

马可

Survival.

艾丽卡

Well, survival is continuing to live even in really hard times.

马可

It comes from the verb to survive.

艾丽卡

Aha.

马可

Right? So, survival is the noun form.

艾丽卡

Right, so… so maybe you are lost in… in…

马可

The jungle.

艾丽卡

The jungle and you have to fight for survival.

马可

Right, you have to try to survive.

艾丽卡

Aha.

马可

Okay, our next word – defend.

艾丽卡

Defend.

马可

Defend.

艾丽卡

Defend.

马可

So, let’s listen to some examples of defend, so you can understand the meaning. Voice: Example one.

阿米拉

We have to defend the castle. The army is trying to kill the king! Voice: Example two.

B

The soldiers defended the base in the difficult battle. Voice: Example three.

凯瑟琳

These new machine guns will defend us.

马可

So, basically, it’s to protect, right?

艾丽卡

Right, to protect from something that is really harmful.

马可

Okay, so, you would defend your children.

艾丽卡

Aha.

马可

You would defend your…

艾丽卡

Your house.

马可

Your house.

艾丽卡

Or your castle.

马可

Your dog, your cat.

艾丽卡

Yeah.

马可

Okay. And our last word on language takeaway – rough.

艾丽卡

Rough.

马可

Rough.

艾丽卡

R-O-U-G-H. Rough.

马可

Right, it’s got that “ugh”…

艾丽卡

Yep.

马可

Sound.

艾丽卡

Aha.

马可

So, it basically means… so when something is rough, it’s a little bit violent…

艾丽卡

And hard…

马可

Hard.

艾丽卡

Yeah.

马可

For example, boxing is a rough sport.

艾丽卡

Or hockey is also a rough sport.

马可

Exactly, so, you have rough sports or maybe even a person can be a little bit rough.

艾丽卡

Yes. Or that person can play rough.

马可

Play rough, exactly.

艾丽卡

Uhu.

马可

So, rough. Okay, so, we’re ready to listen to our dialogue again.

艾丽卡

And this time it’ll be a little bit slower, so, you can understand the language a little bit more clearly. DIALOGUE, SECOND TIME (slow)

马可

So, we saw some interesting phrases in this dialogue. Let’s take a look at them in “fluency builder”. Voice: Fluency builder.

马可

The first phrase that we saw – at all costs.

艾丽卡

At all costs.

马可

At all costs.

艾丽卡

At all costs.

马可

So, let’s listen to some examples before we explain “at all costs”. Voice: Example one.

阿米拉

I’ll protect my kids at all costs. Voice: Example two.

B

We have to get this project done at all costs. Voice: Example three.

凯瑟琳

You find those criminals at all costs.

艾丽卡

Well, if you’re going to protect your kids at all costs, you’re going to protect them even if it’s a really hard.

马可

Right, it doesn’t matter how hard it is or what you have to do.

艾丽卡

Exactly.

马可

You’ll do it.

艾丽卡

Uhu.

马可

At all costs. Now we have, um… now let’s take a look at our second phrase for fluency builder and it’s very similar to at all costs.

艾丽卡

Yeah, really similar.

马可

No matter what.

艾丽卡

No matter what.

马可

No matter what.

艾丽卡

No matter what.

马可

For example, I’m going to go on vacation no matter what my boss says.

艾丽卡

Nothing’s gonna stop you.

马可

Right, if he says no, I’m still going on my vacation.

艾丽卡

And I’m gonna protect my kids no matter what.

马可

Exactly, no matter what.

艾丽卡

I don’t have kids, though.

马可

Hehe. But you will protect them no matter what.

艾丽卡

If I had them.

马可

Hehe. Okay. Uh, and our last phrase – stand in their way.

艾丽卡

Stand in their way.

马可

Stand in their way.

艾丽卡

Stand in their way.

马可

So, let’s listen to some examples of “stand in someone’s way”.

艾丽卡

Uhu.

马可

And then we’ll come back and explain it. Voice: Example one.

阿米拉

Don’t let anything stand in the way of your goals. Voice: Example two.

B

I’m going to find that guy and nothing is going to stand in my way. Voice: Example three.

凯瑟琳

I don’t care what happens. I’m gonna get that money and you’d better not stand in my way.

马可

So, when something stands in your way, it’s…

艾丽卡

It’s preventing you from reaching your goal.

马可

From reaching your goal, right? Or we can also have somebody standing in your way physically.

艾丽卡

Like really you’re standing close to me and I can’t pass through the door.

马可

Right, right.

艾丽卡

Yeah.

马可

So, maybe that person is at the door and… is standing in my way. I can’t go in.

艾丽卡

Yeah.

马可

Okay.

艾丽卡

But here we’re not really talking about a real thing, right? That you can touch.

马可

Right, it’s more of some obstacle that’s preventing you from reaching you goals or from doing what you want to do.

艾丽卡

Yep.

马可

So, now we can listen to our dialogue again and now you can understand these words that we’ve just talked about.

艾丽卡

I know that you’re a big movie fan, right?

马可

Yeah, I’m a big movie fan I usually watch maybe three or five movies a week.

艾丽卡

Really?

马可

Yeah-yeah.

艾丽卡

Wow! Many students of English like to watch movies as a way to improve their English.

马可

That’s one of the best ways to learn English…

艾丽卡

Uhu.

马可

As through songs and movies.

艾丽卡

What do you think of some useful movies that people can watch to practice English?

马可

Well, I would recommend children’s movies.

艾丽卡

Really?

马可

Yeah, they have simple vocabulary, but they have very common language.

艾丽卡

Uhu.

马可

And also what’s happening in the movie is very easy to understand and to follow.

艾丽卡

So. You can see the action and then hear the word.

马可

Exactly.

艾丽卡

Uhu.

马可

So, if you like to watch movies, rent a DVD or go buy a DVD, watch it in the original language…

艾丽卡

Yeah.

马可

With English subtitles.

艾丽卡

So, you should watch it in English.

马可

With English subtitles.

艾丽卡

Yeah, and what is subtitles?

马可

Subtitles are the words that you see at the bottom of the screen that translate…

艾丽卡

Okay.

马可

What the people are saying.

艾丽卡

Okay.

马可

Yeah, that’s the best thing to do. Try that exercise. If you have a pen and paper with you, it’s much better. You can pause the movie, write down the word you don’t understand and then maybe review it later.

艾丽卡

That’s a really good tip. I always tell my students that they should watch movies, listen to music, read the newspaper and write down at least five new words or phrases a week.

马可

Yeah, yeah.

艾丽卡

Yeah.

马可

It’s a really good exercising, you’ll improve a lot.

艾丽卡

Yes. So, everyone, we want you to go and watch a movie in English. Turn on the subtitles and write down some new vocabulary.

马可

Exactly. And if you have any comments or questions or maybe even suggestions, you can come to our website at englishpod.com and leave them in our community page.

艾丽卡

Yeah, Marco and I are always around to help you and we love to hear about what you’re learning and what movies you’re watching.

马可

Exactly. So, we’re out of time today. We’ll see you guys next time. Until then it’s…

艾丽卡

Good bye.

马可

Bye.
